Celebrating the Heart of Education: Honoring Teachers and Caregivers

Every November, the week before Thanksgiving, communities across the nation come together to celebrate American Education Week. It’s a time to recognize the incredible dedication of everyone who helps shape our schools and supports student success.

First celebrated in 1921, American Education Week was created to raise awareness about the importance of quality public education and to encourage community support and funding for schools. At the time, a concern for improving literacy rates lead to a campaign that remains the same to this day: to celebrate the value of learning, promote literacy, and highlight the shared responsibilities between families, educators, and communities to help all kids reach their potential.

American Education Week honors teachers, support staff, custodians, bus drivers, paraprofessionals, substitutes, office staff, and caregivers who keep our schools running smoothly. Each day shines a spotlight on a different member of the educational community.

2025 Daily Themes:

  • Nov. 17- Kickoff Day: Schoolwide activities and gratitude for all educators.
  • Nov. 18- Family Day: Celebrate family involvement and the partnership between school and home.
  • Nov. 19- Education Support Professionals Day: Recognize the unsung heroes of education.
  • Nov. 20- Educator for a Day: Step into an educator’s shoes and help out for a day.
  • Nov. 21- Substitute Educators Day: Honor the flexibility of guest teachers who adapt to whatever is thrown their way.

Here are 5 fun ways to show appreciation during American Education Week:

  1. Make a “Guess the Educator” photo board. Gather childhood photos of teachers and staff. Let students and staff make guess who’s who throughout the week, until the big reveal on Friday.
  2. Host a “Teacher for the Day” event. Give students the chance to take on supervised school tasks like office assistant, cafeteria helper, yard duty aide, teacher or even principal for the day. It’s a great way for students to appreciate what it takes to keep a school running.
  3. Organize a Staff Raffle. Invite parents and local businesses to donate prizes, gift cards, treats, and wellness services. Hold a daily raffle for teachers and staff. You can also volunteer time to organize projects, assist with events, and set up an appreciation luncheon.
  4. Choose a creative theme for the week like Wild West, The 90’s, Wizard of Oz, Flower Power. Decorate bulletin boards, hallways, and the staff lounge to match. Encourage everyone to get involved with themed events.
  5. Designate themed dress up days. Plan a series of spirit days to keep the excitement going all week. Wear school colors, dress like your favorite career, and favorite movie characters. Pair each day with fun coordinated activities. Don’t forget to take pictures!

A quality, inclusive, and equitable education empowers students to become their best selves. It’s an important cause that is worthy of a full week of celebrations. Participate in local events and volunteer to make a difference in kids’ learning journey!
